Why the Basement Comes First in a Cincinnati Home

On the Ohio side of the river, basements are still common. Ohio is part of the Census Bureau's Midwest region, and half of the new single-family homes finished there in 2025 had a full or partial basement. Epoxy Flooring Cincinnati installs basement and home floors in 13 towns across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Basement concrete lives with water in a way a garage slab does not. The Ohio River crested above 60 feet at Cincinnati in April 2025, and after storms in July 2026 the Metropolitan Sewer District took more than 1,500 reports of possible sewer backups, the kind that push wastewater up through floor drains. A floor coating will not keep that water out. It does leave you a floor that can be mopped and disinfected afterward, and we check the slab for moisture before recommending anything.

Age matters too. About four in ten homes inside Cincinnati's city limits, and nearly half of Newport's, were built before 1940. Slabs that old tend to be rough, patched or cracked, and grinding and filling is what fixes them.

Local pages for five of our Ohio towns: basement floors in Mason, Ohio, Loveland, Blue Ash, Fairfield and Sharonville.

The same finishes suit a laundry room, a mudroom by the back door or a home bar. Doing the car bay as well? See garage floor coating. Typical prices are in the Cincinnati epoxy cost guide, and if an old coating is lifting, read why floors peel at the garage door.

What an Epoxy Floor Does for a Basement

Six reasons to coat the lower level instead of leaving it bare. Weighing the cost? Read our honest look at whether epoxy flooring is worth it and why coating an old slab beats tearing it out.

Mop

Cleans Up After Water

If a drain backs up or a storm pushes water in, a seamless coated floor can be mopped and disinfected. Bare concrete just soaks it up.

Dust

No More Concrete Dust

Bare basement concrete sheds fine gray dust onto everything stored down there. A coated floor seals it, so a broom and a damp mop keep it clean.

Light

A Brighter Lower Level

A light solid color or a metallic finish bounces back what little daylight a basement gets.

Wipe

Spills Stay on the Surface

Detergent drips, a leaking washer hose, a spilled drink at the bar: it all sits on a sealed surface and wipes up instead of staining the concrete.

Custom

Your Color, Not Gray

Every color is mixed for the job, whether you want a flake blend, one solid shade or a metallic.

Grip

Safer Where It Gets Wet

Where floors get wet, like a laundry room or a mudroom by the back door, ask for the non-slip additive.

How We Handle a Basement or Home Floor

Five steps, and most of the effort goes into the slab itself.

1

Walk-Through & Price

Free

We walk the room with you, measure it and read the concrete: age, cracks, damp spots. Then we go over finishes and quote the job face to face. Set up a visit.

Residential floor consultation and moisture testing
The first visit: a look at the concrete, a check for damp, and a talk about finishes.
2

Check the Slab, Then Grind

Prep

Basement concrete can carry moisture, so the slab is checked before a system is chosen and a primer added where needed. Then it is ground and sanded smooth.

3

Fill What the Years Left

Repair

Holes, divots and cracks are patched level. On an older or hillside home, we watch for cracks that are still moving and tell you before coating rather than covering them up.

Crack and joint repair on residential concrete
Every crack, hole and divot filled flush, ready for coating.
4

Base, Color & Seal

Coats

Your custom-mixed base color is laid down in sections, flake or metallic pigment is worked in before it sets, and the clear top coat closes it in.

Photos, Clean-Up & Cure Times

Done

Photos of the floor before, during and after are yours to keep, the crew hauls out the debris, and we let you know when the room is ready for feet, then furniture.

Finishes for Basements, Laundry Rooms and Bars

Pick the look first; the prep underneath is the same for every one.

Metallic Epoxy

Pigments in two or more colors blended into a swirled, liquid-metal look, with blue, red, silver and bronze among the color choices. Save it for the rec room or bar, where people notice the floor.

Decorative Flake

Chips in a blend and size you pick, broadcast into the base and sealed clear. The speckled look forgives dust and footprints, which helps on a busy lower level.

Solid Color

A single shade of epoxy (100% solids) in the color you choose. Light colors brighten a laundry room or storage area and show you exactly where to mop.

Polyaspartic & Polyurea

Polyaspartic and polyurea coatings are available as well. Ask us which suits your room and how soon each lets you back in.

Mica, Glitter & Non-Slip

Mica or glitter adds sparkle to a flake blend; for grip where floors get wet, ask for the non-slip additive.

What We Look For in a Cincinnati Basement

Six things that decide which system goes down and how much prep it needs.

Damp in the Slab

Moisture can move up through a slab that sits against the ground. Where the readings call for it, a moisture-mitigation primer runs about $1–$3 per square foot.

Water Coming In

If water is actively seeping through a wall or the floor, that has to be fixed first. No coating should go down over an active leak.

Older Basement Floors

More than half of Cincinnati's homes were built before 1960. Rough, pitted or patched floors get ground and filled back to a sound base.

Soils That Swell and Shrink

Some local soils swell in wet spells and shrink in dry ones, and state geologists note that fill made of them can crack basement floors. A moving crack gets flagged, not hidden.

A Different Slab From the Garage

Ohio's code sets basement slabs at a lower strength class than garage slabs. Out of the salt and weather, a basement job is mostly about moisture and a smooth surface.

Salt From the Garage Door

A mudroom off the garage catches the brine that rides in on winter boots; on a sealed floor it mops up before drying into white rings.

Basement & Home Floor Questions

Common questions before a basement or interior floor.

It is priced by the square foot: typically about $3 to $6 for solid-color epoxy, about $5 to $10 for flake sealed under polyaspartic and about $6 to $12 for metallic. Basements sometimes need a moisture test (about $50 to $300) and, if the numbers are high, a moisture-mitigation primer at roughly $1 to $3 a square foot. These are typical figures, not a quote: we price your floor after seeing it. See the cost guide.

It depends on what the slab shows. We check the moisture before recommending a system, and a primer goes down first where it is needed. Water actively coming through has to be fixed before any coating, because epoxy will not keep water out of a basement.

A coated floor won't stop the water, but it makes the clean-up easier: once the water is out, the sealed, seamless surface can be mopped and disinfected.

Any of the three can work; it comes down to the look you want. Solid color is simple and bright for a laundry room, flake hides everyday dust, and metallic is the showpiece for a rec room or bar. For ideas, see metallic epoxy floors.

Ask us when you choose a system, because walk-on and move-in times depend on which coating goes down. We will give you the times for your floor at the quote.

Yes. On the Kentucky side we cover Fort Thomas, Newport, Erlanger and Florence. Newport has the oldest housing of our 13 towns, with a median build year of 1947.
